Q.
Are there things on the Fireworks 2 CD that are not in the ESD version?

     A. Mine came yesterday, and the first thing I plundered was the Goodies folder. It has additional textures & patterns, and a boatload of Styles. You'll also find demo's of other Macromedia programs as well as IE and Netscape broswers.      The editable clip art is also on the CD.

     Q. I would like my grid default to be different than FW2's. Can I edit the grid so that it always comes up my way rather than the program's?
     A. Open a new file and then select View>Grid Options>Edit Grid..
Set the Grid size the youre desired size.
      Choose File>Save As...
Create a new folder in your Fireworks\Settings subfolder named "Presets"
Save the file as "Fireworks Defaults"-- Fireworks should give the PNG extension.
      Quit Fireworks.
      Relaunch Fireworks.
Choose View>Grid Options>Edit Grid... it should have the new settings.
A lot of your personnal favorite settings can be saved this way. I encourage you to create a presets folder that has all of the things you want to see in a new file and save it and see if that doesn't help your productivity.

A(2). 1. Open a new Fireworks file.
      2. Set the characteristics you want for your default file: Default Canvas size, stroke, fill, URLs, view menu settings, etc....
      3. Choose File Save As...
      4. In the Save As... dialog, navigate to the Fireworks 2\Settings folder
      5. Create a new folder in the Settings folder named "Presets"
      6. Save your Fireworks file and name it "Fireworks Defaults"-- Fireworks should give it the PNG extension
      7. Relaunch Fireworks.
      8. Choose File>New... the new document will be exactly as you set it up in the defaults file.

I love the smell of commands early in the morning...

     Q. How do I edit a gradient? I just want to go from a Green to white but I can only seem to find the pre-made gradients and no way to edit.
     A.
Make a rectangle in the fill .....click radial. Just to the right of the effect tab is a little arrow. Click that and a fly-out option appears. Click edit gradient. You have the option of using presets or click the square box under color bar and choosing your own colors... Once fill is applied, you can further edit by using the paint can from the main tool bar to adjust the sizing of the gradient.

      Q. Is there a way to change the default directory when you go to File;Open?
     A.
Try altering the shortcut properties from the desktop. You can specify a "start in" directory, which you can change.
